Course description
Colorectal cancer remains one of the most challenging problems worldwide. Even in
Lithuania, in the last years colorectal cancer incidence has been increasing from 4 to 6
percent each year, with up to one and a half thousand new cases per year in a population
of 3,5 million inhabitants. However, occupying a very important role in the whole burden in
the reasons of death from malignant diseases, colorectal cancer today may be cured,
specially at an early stage, and in some instances prevented. Thus this course aims to give
an update in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease. Progress in genetics and
pathology dramatically increased our knowledge in the spheres which not so long ago lay
dormant, and enables clinicians not only to deal with these conditions or premalignant
lesions, but leaves them with duty of indentifying potential risks groups and taking measures
known to be effective for preventing colorectal cancer.
The program focuses on clinical, genetic and pathological correlations with an emphasis
on screening, prevention, diagnosis, surgical and medical treatment modalities of
colorectal cancer today. Contributors of this course will give state of art lectures in the most
important topics.
The program is intended for the residents in gastroenterology and surgery, colorectal
surgeons, general surgeons and gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, family doctors,
pathologists, geneticists and all those health care professionals who are involved in the
management of colorectal cancer. Participants are as well expected not only from Lithuania,
but from neghbouring countries, including Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Poland, Belorussia and
Ukraine.
We do hope that course participants will remember this course of the Mediterranean
School of Oncology and European School of Oncology as a highlight of up-to-date training
in the field of colorectal cancer.
